The Roadside Weed That’s a Liver Tonic and Blood Pressure Stabilizer

Eleusine Indica: A Common Weed with Remarkable Benefits

Eleusine Indica, commonly known as crabgrass or goosegrass, is a widespread weed in Vietnam, thriving from roadsides to gardens. Globally, it’s considered a “miracle herb” for its numerous health benefits.

Overview of Eleusine Indica

According to Gia đình và Xã hội, this plant, also known by names like "Thanh Tam Grass" or "Purple Fingergrass," has the scientific name Eleusine indica Gaertn. Belonging to the grass family, it grows 20–90 cm tall with rapidly developing roots, branching stems, and alternating leaves. Its flowers cluster together, and the fruit has a triangular shape.

Eleusine Indica typically sprouts at the end of spring, wilting by early summer. However, in mountainous, rainy, and humid regions, it grows year-round from seeds.

The herb contains various active compounds, including coumarins, saponins, alkaloids, tannins, steroids, and phenols. Specific components are found in different parts of the plant, such as:

  • Above-ground parts: Beta-sitosterol and beta-palmitoyl.
  • Stems and leaves: Flavonoids.

Health Benefits of Eleusine Indica

1. Liver Protection and Cholesterol Regulation

A study on obese mice demonstrated that a hexane extract of Eleusine Indica reduced total cholesterol levels, lowered LDL cholesterol, and increased HDL cholesterol. It also improved ALT and AST levels, indicating liver protection and support for lipid metabolism.

2. Blood Pressure Reduction

Ethanolic and chloroform extracts from Eleusine Indica have demonstrated significant antihypertensive effects. Studies show that the ethanolic extract is particularly effective in lowering high blood pressure compared to methanolic extracts.

3. Antibacterial Properties

This herb exhibits antibacterial activity against various bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella choleraesuis. Methanolic and chloroform extracts have been proven effective in combating these pathogens while also exhibiting antioxidant and cytotoxic properties.

4. Anti-inflammatory and Fever Reduction

C-glycosylflavones extracted from the plant have been effective in reducing inflammation in flu- or pneumonia-afflicted mice. Other studies confirmed that ethanolic and ethyl acetate extracts reduced swelling in test subjects, depending on dosage.

5. Hair Loss Prevention

Beta-sitosterol in Eleusine Indica lowers bad cholesterol and inhibits DHT, a hormone responsible for hair thinning and loss. Palmitoyl compounds neutralize free radicals, helping reduce hair breakage and promoting healthier growth.

6. Kidney Function Support

Research has shown that extracts of Eleusine Indica help regulate urea, creatinine, sodium, and potassium levels. Traditionally, it has been used to promote diuresis and protect kidney functions.

7. Hemorrhoid Treatment

The plant’s components, such as beta-palmitoyl, sitosterol, nitrates, and flavonoids, possess anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that prevent infection and necrosis in hemorrhoids. Its blood-stanching properties reduce swelling and expedite healing.

Traditional Remedies Using Eleusine Indica

1. For Fever

Boil fresh or dried Eleusine Indica (excluding flowers) alone or with pennywort, fish mint, plantain, or cogon grass roots. Drink the decoction to reduce fever, alleviate headaches, and improve sleep.

2. For Mouth Ulcers

Mouth ulcers and tongue sores often result from internal heat. Prepare a mixture of Eleusine Indica, purslane, plantain, false daisy, and fish mint. Boil and drink the concentrate for a few days to soothe symptoms.

3. For Hair Health

Dry and roast the entire plant (excluding flowers). Combine 30–40g of Eleusine Indica with 20g each of eucommia bark and prepared rehmannia. Drink the decoction daily for several weeks. Women can enhance the mixture with dried mulberries for better results.

Alternatively, use a boiled mixture of Eleusine Indica and pomelo peel as a hair rinse to combat hair breakage and dryness.

4. For Detoxification and Acne

Eleusine Indica acts as a cooling agent for those prone to acne or sluggish liver function. Drink its tea-like decoction regularly. For enhanced detoxification, combine it with dandelion and artichoke flowers.
