A hidden rearview mirror feature can reduce headlight glare at night and help drivers stay focused on dark roads.
Driving after sunset can be significantly more challenging than driving during the day. Reduced visibility, eye fatigue, and the glare of headlights from vehicles behind can make nighttime journeys stressful, especially on highways or poorly lit roads. Surprisingly, many drivers are unaware that most standard rearview mirrors include a simple built-in feature designed to solve this problem.
This small lever—or toggle—located beneath many traditional interior rearview mirrors allows drivers to switch between "day" and "night" modes. While it may seem insignificant, flipping this lever changes the angle of the reflective surface, reducing the intensity of bright headlights shining from vehicles behind without blocking the driver's rear view.
Many people spend years driving without ever using this feature simply because they do not know what it is for. During daytime driving, the mirror provides a clear, bright reflection. At night, however, strong LED or high-beam headlights can produce uncomfortable glare that strains the eyes and distracts the driver. Activating the night mode softens these reflections, making them far less irritating.
Unlike expensive electronic auto-dimming mirrors found in some luxury vehicles, this manual anti-glare system requires no power, sensors, or maintenance. It relies on a clever optical design using two reflective surfaces inside the mirror. When switched to night mode, the mirror reflects a dimmer image while still allowing drivers to see vehicles approaching from behind.
Reducing glare offers several important safety benefits. Drivers are less likely to squint or look away from the mirror, allowing them to keep their attention on the road. Less eye strain also means greater comfort during long nighttime trips, especially when driving on busy highways where traffic remains heavy after dark.
However, this feature does not replace safe driving habits. Drivers should still keep mirrors properly adjusted before setting off, avoid looking directly into intense headlights whenever possible, and maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles. Clean mirrors and windshields also improve visibility by preventing additional light scattering caused by dirt or smudges.
It is also worth noting that many newer vehicles come equipped with automatic electrochromic mirrors that dim themselves whenever bright light is detected. If your car has this feature, you will not find the manual lever because the system performs the adjustment automatically.
If your vehicle has a traditional rearview mirror with a small tab underneath, take a moment to try it before your next evening drive. Switching between the two positions immediately demonstrates the difference in brightness and can make nighttime driving noticeably more comfortable.
Sometimes the most useful automotive features are also the simplest. This small lever has been included in millions of vehicles for decades, yet countless drivers never realize its purpose. Learning how to use it properly is a quick, free way to improve comfort, reduce glare, and help make every night journey a little safer.
