The Special Uses of Pepper Soaked in White Vinegar: A Simple Method to Solve Many Household Problems
The combination of pepper and white vinegar can help you tackle many household issues. Let’s explore how to make it and its various benefits.
Pepper and white vinegar are common household spices, often used to season food. While pepper has a strong, pungent flavor that enhances dishes, white vinegar adds a sour note and is also useful for cleaning food. So, what happens when you combine these two ingredients?
How to Make Pepper Soaked in White Vinegar
Prepare 15–20 grams of dried peppercorns and place them in a bowl. You can crush the pepper to release more aroma. Add white vinegar and stir well. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and let it sit for 3 days. After this time, the compounds in the pepper will have infused into the vinegar, and the mixture will be ready to use.
Uses of Pepper Soaked in White Vinegar
1. Deodorizing the Refrigerator
Pepper has a pleasant aroma and natural deodorizing properties. White vinegar also helps neutralize odors and prevents bacterial growth. Together, they’re a powerful combo.
You can poke several holes in the plastic wrap and place the bowl inside the fridge. The scent from the pepper will help eliminate unpleasant odors quickly.
Since refrigerators store a mix of raw and cooked foods, bad smells are common. Placing a bowl of pepper vinegar inside is an effective way to freshen the air.
You can also soak a cloth in the vinegar mixture and use it to wipe down the fridge. It removes stains, disinfects, and deodorizes. Be sure to wipe it again with clean water afterward.
2. Repelling Mosquitoes
Place a bowl of the pepper vinegar mixture in mosquito-prone areas like under the bed or in room corners. The smell will keep mosquitoes away.
Pepper and vinegar are both safe, natural ingredients. Many people use mosquito coils or insecticides, but these contain chemicals that aren’t always safe, especially for children. Using pepper and vinegar is a healthier alternative that repels mosquitoes without harming your family.
3. Eliminating Kitchen Odors
The kitchen can develop lingering smells from cooking, especially in poorly ventilated areas. You can place a bowl of pepper vinegar in a kitchen corner to neutralize odors and repel insects.
You can also pour the mixture into a spray bottle and use it in the trash can or on greasy surfaces. It helps eliminate odors and dissolve grease.
4. Other Household Uses
You can place bowls of pepper vinegar anywhere that needs deodorizing—shoe cabinets, bathrooms, etc. Be careful to avoid spills. Once the scent fades, replace it with a fresh batch.
Besides pepper, you can also use other fragrant spices like Sichuan peppercorns (hua jiao), which have similar deodorizing and mosquito-repelling effects. These natural ingredients are food-safe and harmless when used around the house.
However, if you have young children or pets, be mindful of where you place the mixture to prevent accidental spills and extra cleanup.
