Feeling hungry shortly after eating may seem like nothing more than having a big appetite.

But increased hunger is another recognized symptom of diabetes. When the body isn't able to use glucose effectively, changes in how the body gets and uses energy can contribute to increased hunger.

The important part: symptoms alone cannot diagnose diabetes

Having one or even several of these symptoms does not automatically mean you have diabetes.

Many of them can be caused by other conditions, medications, lifestyle factors, or temporary changes. And importantly, some people with type 2 diabetes have few or no obvious symptoms.

The only way to know whether you have diabetes is through appropriate blood-glucose testing performed or interpreted by a healthcare professional.

If you've noticed several of these changes, especially if they're persistent or getting worse, consider talking with your doctor about whether you should be tested.

Your body doesn't always send a dramatic warning. Sometimes, the earliest clues are the subtle changes we are most likely to ignore.
