These common garden leaves could be a natural remedy for bone and joint problems—yet many overlook their power

Treating Joint Pain with Piper lolot Leaves (Lá Lốt)

Using lá lốt (Piper lolot leaves) to treat joint pain is a traditional folk remedy widely applied in Oriental medicine. It is known to help relieve pain, improve arthritis symptoms, and reduce inflammation in a safe and simple way. Applying this method may help ease swelling, pain, and slow disease progression.

This article is written under the professional guidance of doctors from the Department of Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Vinmec International General Hospital.

1. Signs and Symptoms of Joint Pain

Joint pain may occur intermittently or persistently, depending on the severity of joint damage, daily activity levels, and weather conditions. In severe cases, the pain can become chronic and significantly affect daily life. Common symptoms include:

  • Joint pain: Pain may appear during or after movement. Acute pain is often associated with inflammation, while chronic pain tends to be dull and may ease with rest.

  • Joint stiffness: Usually occurs in the morning after waking up or after periods of inactivity. Typically lasts less than 30 minutes and improves with movement.

  • Swelling and joint deformity: Some joints may appear enlarged due to arthritis or joint degeneration.

  • Crackling sounds when moving: Patients may notice grinding or cracking sounds when moving joints, a sign of cartilage wear.

  • Restricted movement: The range of motion may be limited, making daily activities difficult.

  • Muscle atrophy: Prolonged pain and limited activity may cause surrounding muscles to gradually weaken and shrink.

Recognizing these early signs helps patients seek appropriate treatment. Among various remedies, using lá lốt can help alleviate symptoms and prevent complications that lower quality of life.

2. Causes of Joint Pain

Joint pain may arise from multiple causes. Common risk factors include:

  • Unhealthy lifestyle habits: Lack of physical activity, poor diet (excess processed food, insufficient calcium and vitamin D), incorrect posture, and improper lifting of heavy objects can negatively affect joints. Though often overlooked, these habits may lead to degeneration and damage over time.

  • Joint aging: Aging is a major cause of joint pain, especially in people over 50. Over time, cartilage wears down, synovial fluid decreases, flexibility is reduced, and the risk of osteoarthritis increases, leading to prolonged pain.

  • Noncompliance with treatment: For patients with joint diseases, long-term treatment requires persistence, combining medication with physical therapy. However, many fail to follow through, stopping midway, which worsens symptoms and disease progression.

Identifying and adjusting these risk factors can help improve joint health and prevent complications.

3. Treating Joint Pain with Piper lolot Leaves (Lá Lốt)

Lá lốt is a common herb in traditional medicine, known for its ability to reduce pain naturally, safely, and affordably. It can be easily prepared at home as a remedy for chronic joint pain, especially in older adults.

3.1 How to Use Lá Lốt for Joint Pain Relief

According to Dr. Vũ Văn Tài (Vinmec Sao Phương Đông Traditional Medicine Center):

  • Preparation: Collect both leaves and stems of lá lốt. Wash thoroughly, cut into 10 cm pieces, dry, and lightly roast until aromatic. Store in an airtight container in a dry place.

  • Usage: Each night before bed, take a handful of dried lá lốt, pour boiling water over it, cover for 10–15 minutes, and let it cool to a warm temperature. Use this water to soak your feet.

Notes while soaking:

  • Water level should be about 15 cm above the ankles to stimulate key acupoints and improve absorption of active compounds.

  • Soak for 15–20 minutes. In cold weather, reheat the water if it cools too quickly.

  • For hand joint pain, soak hands the same way.

3.2 Benefits of Lá Lốt in Joint Pain Relief

Lá lốt helps eliminate toxins that cause inflammation and relieves joint pain. Soaking feet in lá lốt water not only eases chronic pain but also helps prevent swelling and joint stiffness (known in Oriental medicine as "phong thấp").

After consistent use, elderly patients often experience noticeable pain relief, especially during seasonal or humidity changes.

3.3 Precautions for Acute Arthritis

For acute arthritis cases with symptoms of swelling, heat, redness, and pain, adjust the soaking method:

  • Allow the water to cool completely before soaking to avoid worsening inflammation.

While lá lốt can support pain relief, patients should always consult specialists before use. For acute arthritis or progressive joint disease, medical treatment under professional guidance remains necessary.
