Experts warn some children's sandals may contain harmful chemicals.
Many parents focus on comfort, appearance, and price when buying shoes for their children. However, recent testing has raised concerns about the safety of some children's PVC sandals after researchers discovered alarmingly high levels of potentially harmful chemicals in certain products.
According to findings reported by an environmental protection organization in China, several samples of children's PVC sandals sold on popular e-commerce platforms were found to contain excessive amounts of phthalates—chemical compounds commonly used to make plastic products softer and more flexible.
Researchers purchased samples of some of the best-selling children's PVC sandals and submitted them to an independent laboratory for testing. The results revealed that a significant number of products exceeded recommended safety limits for phthalate content.
Among the tested products, some samples reportedly contained phthalate levels hundreds of times higher than accepted standards. Investigators also noted that many of the products that failed testing were unbranded items with limited or missing product information.
Phthalates are widely used in plastic manufacturing because they improve flexibility and durability. However, health experts have expressed concern about long-term exposure to certain phthalates because they are classified as endocrine-disrupting chemicals.
Endocrine disruptors are substances that may interfere with the body's hormonal system. Scientific studies have suggested that prolonged exposure to some phthalates could potentially affect growth and development, particularly in children.
Researchers have investigated possible links between excessive phthalate exposure and issues such as hormonal imbalances, reproductive system development, behavioral disorders, allergies, asthma, and other health concerns. Some studies have also examined whether exposure may be associated with earlier puberty in certain children.
Experts emphasize that risk depends on multiple factors, including the amount of exposure, duration, and individual susceptibility. Nevertheless, minimizing unnecessary exposure to potentially harmful chemicals remains an important precaution.
Children may come into contact with phthalates through skin contact, inhalation, or contact with contaminated materials. Because young children are still developing, they may be more vulnerable to environmental chemical exposures than adults.
Consumer safety specialists recommend purchasing footwear from reputable retailers, official brand stores, and trusted manufacturers that provide clear product information and quality certifications.

Experts also recommend allowing children to try on footwear before purchase to ensure proper fit, comfort, and walking stability.
While not all PVC sandals pose a health risk, the findings serve as a reminder that product quality and safety should be important considerations when purchasing items intended for children.
