Three Common Fruits Contain “Toxins” You Need to Be Especially Careful About When Eating

Fruits are generally considered healthy and nutritious, but did you know that some common fruits contain natural substances that can be harmful if not handled or consumed properly? Here are three familiar fruits that contain “toxins” you should be aware of to protect your health.

1. Apples
Apples are a popular fruit packed with vitamins and fiber. However, their seeds contain amygdalin, a compound that can release cyanide when digested. While swallowing a few seeds accidentally is usually harmless, eating large quantities can be dangerous. It’s best to avoid eating the seeds altogether.

2. Cherry
Cherry pits also contain amygdalin, similar to apple seeds. Crushing or chewing cherry pits releases this toxin, which can cause symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to serious poisoning if consumed in large amounts. Always avoid biting into the pits and discard them properly.

3. Elderberries
Elderberries are often used in jams, syrups, and supplements, but their raw berries, leaves, and stems contain cyanogenic glycosides, which are toxic. Consuming raw or unripe elderberries can lead to nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Always cook elderberries thoroughly before eating or using them in recipes.
