Without answers to those questions, dramatic conclusions should be treated cautiously.

The photograph may still be interesting—but the real story may be considerably different from the one suggested by a viral caption.

Chapter 4 — The Difference Between Being Questioned and Being Accused

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding viral police photographs is the assumption that anyone pictured with officers must have done something wrong.

That is not necessarily the case.

A person can interact with police for many reasons without being charged with a crime. Someone might be a witness, a reporting party, a person who needs assistance, or simply someone present when officers arrive.

Even when officers investigate a person directly, an investigation is not the same thing as a conviction.

This distinction becomes especially important when photographs are shared without accompanying documents or verified reporting.

A picture of an officer searching a bag, for example, does not tell viewers why the search occurred. There may have been consent, legal authority, a safety concern, an investigation, or another explanation that cannot be determined from the image itself.

Similarly, an officer wearing gloves does not automatically mean that a serious crime has occurred. Gloves can be used when handling objects that need to be preserved or examined.

Without reliable context, it would be irresponsible to turn these visual details into accusations.

The safest interpretation is therefore the narrowest one supported by the available evidence: the photographs appear to document a police-related encounter, but they do not independently establish the full circumstances.

That may sound less dramatic than a sensational social-media caption.

But accuracy matters.
