Using the Air Conditioner and Fan at the Same Time? I Expected Higher Costs, but the Truth Surprised Me

Does running the fan and air conditioner at the same time use more electricity?

This is a question many people are curious about. So, does using the air conditioner and a fan together make your electricity bill go up?

Does running the fan and air conditioner at the same time use more electricity?

Air conditioners help us feel more comfortable in hot weather. There are several ways to maximize the cool air from an AC so it spreads throughout the room, and one of them is using a fan.

A fan combined with an air conditioner can make the room feel more comfortable faster and can even help lower your electricity bill.

Many people wonder if running the fan and AC together will consume more power.

Benefits of using a fan along with the air conditioner

An air conditioner works by drawing in air from the room, passing it through a cooling filter to chill it and remove dust. However, it takes some time for this cool air to spread evenly throughout the room. That’s why people often set the AC to a low temperature, around 23–24°C (73–75°F), and wait a while for the whole room to cool because the air circulation isn’t optimal. This means the AC consumes more electricity and has to work harder.

Other issues may also arise, such as dry skin, imbalance in body temperature leading to headaches, dizziness, sore throats, or even thermal shock (especially if you frequently go in and out of the room). But when you use a fan as well—whether a ceiling fan or a misting fan—the airflow helps circulate the cool air faster and more evenly.

When you combine a fan with an air conditioner, you can set the AC to 27–28°C (80–82°F) and still feel comfortable. Without a fan, this temperature may not be cool enough, forcing you to lower the setting to around 19–21°C (66–70°F), which consumes much more electricity.

In addition, a fan can help disperse any stale or unpleasant air that some people notice from air conditioners. Using a fan together with an AC solves this problem while providing a refreshing, comfortable environment.

However, for the best results, remember to clean your fan regularly. You might not notice dust buildup while it’s running, but once it stops, you may be surprised at how much dust has accumulated on the blades.
