Chapter 4: When It Might Be a Health Issue

Although lifestyle and stress are the most common explanations, certain medical conditions can also contribute to repeated awakenings.

Sleep apnea, a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep, often causes individuals to wake without realizing why. Acid reflux can become worse when lying down, leading to discomfort during the night. Chronic pain conditions may also interrupt sleep cycles.

Mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders and depression are frequently associated with sleep disturbances. In some cases, hormonal changes, particularly among older adults, can affect sleep patterns as well.

If nighttime awakenings persist for weeks, significantly affect daytime functioning, or are accompanied by symptoms such as loud snoring, breathing difficulties, or severe fatigue, seeking medical advice may be beneficial.
