Chapter 2: The Connection Between Right-Side Sleeping and Acid Reflux
One of the most frequently discussed concerns regarding right-side sleeping is acid reflux. Acid reflux occurs when stomach contents flow backward into the esophagus, causing irritation and a burning sensation.
The structure of the stomach and esophagus may partially explain why body position matters. When lying on the right side, gravity may allow stomach acid to move closer to the lower esophageal sphincter in some individuals.
As a result, people who are prone to reflux may experience symptoms more frequently while sleeping on their right side. These symptoms can include heartburn, chest discomfort, a sour taste in the mouth, or disrupted sleep.
Researchers have observed that left-side sleeping often reduces the time acid remains in contact with the esophagus. This does not mean right-side sleeping is harmful for everyone, but it may be less comfortable for people already struggling with digestive issues.
Lifestyle factors such as eating large meals before bedtime, consuming alcohol, or lying down immediately after eating can also increase the likelihood of reflux symptoms.
For individuals who frequently wake up with heartburn, experimenting with sleep position may be a simple strategy worth considering alongside professional medical advice.
