What Are Tonsil Stones? Understanding the Small White Lumps That Appear in Your Throat

Many people have experienced a strange sensation in their throat at some point in their lives. It may feel as though something is stuck, even when there is no obvious reason. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, a small white or yellowish lump appears in the mouth after coughing, sneezing, or clearing the throat. While this can be alarming, the culprit is often something known as a tonsil stone, also called a tonsillolith.

Tonsil stones are small accumulations of debris that form in the tiny crevices, or crypts, of the tonsils. These deposits can consist of food particles, dead cells, mucus, and bacteria. Over time, the material can harden and form small white lumps that vary in size from tiny grains to larger, more noticeable pieces.

Although the appearance of a tonsil stone can be surprising, they are generally harmless. In many cases, people do not even realize they have them until one becomes dislodged and appears in the mouth. Others may experience symptoms that prompt them to investigate the cause.
