U.S. President-elect Donald Trump stated that he and former President Barack Obama "probably really" like each other despite having "different philosophies," after the two talked and laughed during the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., on January 9.
After images of the two appearing friendly quickly spread online, Trump said he "didn’t realize how close" he seemed to be with Obama. "I said it looked like two people who like each other, and maybe we do like each other. We have a few differing philosophies, right? But maybe we get along. I don’t know. I get along with everybody," Trump shared with NBC News.
The president-elect did not specify what he had said that made Obama laugh.
According to lip-reading expert Jeremy Freeman, it appears that both Trump and Obama were cautious of the cameras directed at them, so they sat close together and seemed to want to appear friendly.
Based on their lip movements, the expert speculated that they were likely talking about international agreements. He guessed that at one point, Trump leaned toward Obama and said, "I pulled out of that (agreement). Those are the conditions. Can you imagine that?"
Obama laughed, and Trump added, "And then, I’ll pull out," according to Freeman.
While both seemed to enjoy sitting next to each other during the funeral of former President Carter, Vice President Kamala Harris, sitting in front of them, appeared to sigh after noticing the two were laughing. She then glanced over her left shoulder toward them before looking straight ahead again.
The friendly interaction between Trump and Obama came after what was believed to be a tense relationship between the two over the past decade.
