Scientific studies have shown that dogs can sometimes identify certain medical conditions through smell. Specially trained dogs have been used to detect changes associated with diabetes, seizures, and even some forms of cancer.

The reason lies in volatile organic compounds, tiny chemical substances released by the body. When health conditions alter these compounds, dogs may notice the difference long before humans become aware of any symptoms.

However, it is important not to assume that a dog's interest automatically indicates a medical problem. Dogs may be attracted to unfamiliar scents from exercise, hygiene products, food, medications, or environmental factors.

Veterinarians explain that curiosity is usually the most likely explanation. A dog that repeatedly sniffs a person may simply be responding to a new scent or trying to learn more about someone it has recently met.

If a dog suddenly becomes unusually focused on a particular area and the behavior is accompanied by concerning symptoms, seeking medical advice may be reasonable. Nevertheless, canine behavior alone should never be considered a diagnosis.
