Massage can temporarily increase local blood flow to the area being massaged, and the physical movement may feel especially pleasant when your feet have been inactive or tired.

But that does not mean foot massage can “clear blocked arteries” or cure a circulation disorder.

Those are very different claims.

If your feet feel tired after standing all day, gentle massage may make them feel more comfortable.

Some people also find that elevating their legs while resting provides additional relief from the sensation of heaviness.

But persistent swelling is different.

If your feet or ankles regularly become swollen, especially if the swelling is new, severe, affects only one side, or occurs together with pain, redness, shortness of breath, or chest discomfort, it should not simply be treated with massage.

Those symptoms can sometimes indicate an underlying medical problem requiring professional attention.

People with diabetes also need to be particularly careful.

Diabetes can affect nerves and circulation in the feet, making injuries harder to notice and heal. Someone with reduced sensation may accidentally apply too much pressure or massage an area that has an unnoticed wound.

The same caution applies to people with significant vascular disease, blood-clotting problems, unexplained foot pain, or recent injuries.

For otherwise healthy adults, however, gentle massage can be a pleasant way to care for tired feet.

Think of it as comfort care rather than a medical treatment.

The distinction is important because social media often presents massage as a cure for everything from poor circulation to organ problems.

Your feet are connected to the rest of your body through nerves, blood vessels, muscles, and connective tissue, but that does not mean every internal organ can be directly manipulated through a particular spot on the sole.

Massage can feel good without needing a dramatic explanation.

Chapter 4: The Surprising Connection Between Foot Comfort and Sleep

One of the most interesting potential benefits of a nighttime foot massage is not what happens to the feet themselves, but how the experience may influence the entire bedtime routine.

When you massage your feet, you are usually sitting or lying down.

You are not working.
