A performance outfit of TWICE’s Nayeon sparks controversy on Korean social media for resembling an outfit of BLACKPINK’s Jennie.
Recently, a topic titled “Did the stylist of TWICE’s Nayeon learn from Jennie’s styling” was published on the Korean forum Instiz, drawing attention.
According to the topic, the performance outfit of Nayeon on stage for day 1 for TWICE’s “Ready To Be” concert in Mexico bears strong resemblances to an outfit previously worn by BLACKPINK’s Jennie.
In particular, Nayeon, who wore a dazzling red outfit, captivates all eyes with her adorable yet charming visual. However, the combination of a red body-con short dress with lace stockings and tone-on-tone shoes evokes memories of Jennie’s appearance on Lee Hyori’s Red Carpet show. At that time, the female rapper flooded social media with a pure princess look, showcasing her perfect body in a figure-hugging white dress and matching lace stocking.
Her lace stockings matching the dress and shoes, however, draws comparison to Jennie
For a long time, Jennie has proven herself to be a top Korean influencer when it comes to fashion, even admired as her generation’s “IT girl”. It’s therefore not uncommon for idols to wear outfits inspired by Jennie.
Most recently, for instance, Jennie popularized “balletcore” in Korea after her various balletcore outfits for “You & Me” stages during the Born Pink World Tour.
As a result, many people associate the combination of dress and lace stocking matching in color to Jennie. These people then believe that Nayeon’s outfit is inspired by Jennie, and some of them began to criticize JYP for “‘allowing TWICE to wear outfits inspired by BLACKPINK”.
However, many defend Nayeon, saying that her outfit lare quite common both in and outside of K-pop, and Jennie was not the first to do it. In fact, Nayeon once wore an all-black outfit even before Jennie on the Lee Hyori show.
In addition, defenders insist that neither Jennie nor Nayeon “copied” each other, as they were just following fashion trends. As of the moment, opinions are still divided.
Below are some comments from netizens:
- Isn’t this style common as a performance outfit?
- But it’s not the first time JYP has referred to BLACKPINK’s performance outfits, remember the Hanbok plagiarism incident?
- TWICE’s stylist sometimes lacks creativity and often imitates other groups.
- Similar styles, from hair details to shoes and flowers!
- This style is just trending nowadays so both of them are just following it… It’s not copying at all
- Don’t drag Jennie into your agenda
