No matter how often you clean your home, clutter can make it look like a mess. Get into the habit of organizing your home daily, weekly, and monthly by developing some good habits that will keep your entire home looking neater and nicer.
Daily Habits
Put everything away when you’re done with it. While it’s tempting to finish watching that show or keep playing on Facebook after you finish that snack or drink that coffee, you need to get into the habit of putting away everything once you’re done with it. This includes throwing trash away, putting dishes in the sink or the dishwasher, and throwing laundry in the hamper. Don’t leave your shoes by the door or your wallet sitting in the wrong place. Put everything back, and your home will start to look a whole lot tidier.
Make the bed. Once you make your bed, the whole room will look a whole lot newer and more put together. Making the bed is a great way to jump-start your day and get into a neat mindset.
Do a nightly run-through. Before you go to bed each night, spend 15 minutes going through the house. Actively search for out-of-place items and put them where they go. You may find jackets, shoes, dishes, trash, and other items not where they belong. If you spend time putting stuff away every night, your home will look much more well organized.
Weekly Habits
Put your laundry away. Don’t let laundry pile up because this will always make your home look messy. Wash, fold, and put all laundry away at least once a week. And since you’re doing it anyway, fold everything the same way. Fold towels so that the fold is always facing the same way to create neater stacks. Do this with everything you fold, and all your items will sit on shelves and sit in drawers much more neatly.
Spend 10 minutes in the bathroom. At least once a week, spend 10 minutes straightening up the bathroom closet, drawers, and cabinets. Bathroom items have a way of spreading throughout the house and getting super messy inside cabinets. Take a little time to get this all straightened up, and your home will look much neater.
Straighten up your shoes. After a busy week, it’s easy for your home to look a bit like a war zone. Take the time to put your shoes away neatly once a week, with every pair in the place where it goes. Place your shoes neatly side-by-side to keep shoe storage areas looking nice and neat.
Monthly Habits
Check your kitchen cabinets. Look through your kitchen cabinets once a month. Straighten up the food storage shelves and spices, make sure the dishes and glasses are neatly organized, and throw away or give away any items you know you’re not using.
Clean out the fridge. Get into the habit of cleaning out your fridge at least once a month. Throw out any old food and check all the expiration dates on everything. Jellies, sauces, and dressings do expire. You may be surprised to find out that you’ve got some old bottles of condiments in your fridge. Throw all this stuff away, and the fridge is going to start looking much neater. Wipe down all the shelves, racks, and doors while you’re at it.
Organize your counters. Stuff tends to pile up on counters. It ends up sitting out instead of getting put away. Put all this stuff into the cabinets and drawers where it goes to make the counters look much neater and makes your home look much more organized overall.
