Days after Darren Espanto and Kyline Alcantara‘s viral interaction during an episode of It’s Showtime, we finally got an answer to their mysterious banter.
But before that, let’s rewind to the moment when Kyline guested on the noontime show where Darren is now a regular host. During a segment, the two young stars exchanged remarks that *obviously* meant something.
In the midst of joking and throwing humorous banter, Kyline turned to Darren and said, “Kasi nga…” Kyline was waiting for Darren to continue her sentence while smiling. Darren, who appeared to be at a loss of words, laughed and asked, “Ano?” Kyline can be heard telling him, “Sabihin mo,” as if she’s hinting at something for Darren to reveal to the public.
The continuation of that “Kasi nga” remark was later on revealed in Darren’s interview with Boy Abunda. Apparently, the two had a romantic connection in the past. But, the singer-actor could not directly answer the inquiries. Instead of labeling it as an official relationship, he referred to his past with Kyline as something that happened out of “puppy love.”
“Hindi ko po masagot ng yes or no, it was a puppy love kind of thing,” he honestly said in an episode of Fast Talk With Boy Abunda.
“So it was a formal puppy love relationship?” Tito Boy asked Darren.
Here, Darren quickly replied, “Yeah.” Mentioning their recent interaction on It’s Showtime, the 22-year-old confessed, “Kasi nga, naging kami dati. Kaya binibiro kami ni Ate Vice [Ganda].”
Why did Darren Espanto and Kyline Alcantara break up?
Darren also opened up about his former one-year relationship with Kyline. “There were some misunderstandings. When we both matured, parang six years later, napag-usapan na namin. And ayun po, eventually we became okay with each other again.”
Darren made it clear that their split was not in any way caused by a third party. Instead, it was really because of some of their misunderstandings. He says those arguments were primarily because they were not mature enough. “Misunderstandings talaga [ang reason]. Kasi siyempre kapag mga bata, konting mga petty na away…”
From this interview, we can say that Darren and Kyline dated in their teenage years. But it can be recalled that the two have openly spent time together when Kyline became Mavy Legaspi‘s girlfriend, who is also a good friend of Darren. Mavy is the twin brother of Cassy Legaspi, who was also romantically linked to Darren.
Darren Espanto’s friendship with Cassy Legaspi
Prior to the resurfacing of Darren’s romantic past with Kyline, he also clarified his present status with Cassy.
Darren declared that they did not have a romantic relationship in an interview with MJ Felipe. “Makulit sila e, sabi namin best friend lang kami ni Cassy. Best friends talaga e. Parang it’s something that a lot of people, I guess, won’t get. Hindi ko alam kung paano i-explain but siyempre, andun pa rin ‘yung pagmamahal namin para sa isa’t isa,” he said in his interview with MJ.
After this interview, Cassy recently stirred the rumor mill with her alleged cryptic posts. Her mom, Carmina Villaroel, also posted a quote that netizens suspect was alluding to Darren’s interview.
Darren addressed the speculations on his guesting with Boy Abunda. He firmly explained that there was no rift between him and the whole Legaspi family.
Once and for all Darren clarified the matter. “I clarified things that we’re best friends. People kind of misunderstood the whole situation. I messaged Cass right away… After that interview, there were some IG stories from Tita Carmina and Cass and they [netizens] kind of stitched it together.”
The Instagram stories in question were when Carmina posted a quote that read, “Don’t expect the same in return.” Cassy shared Olivia Rodrigo‘s song, “Favorite Crime” via an Instagram Story.
“Hindi po [kami nag-away]. ‘Yun nga sinabi ko sa kanya. I already know, Tita Carmina posts an inspirational quote everyday sa IG stories niya. Si Cass naman mahilig siyang mag-repost ng mga naririnig niyang kanta.”
He furthered, “That’s something I clarified with her. If you’re mad at me, please tell me. Kasi ganoon naman po kami. She doesn’t have any ill feelings towards me. She and her family.”
“Since we’re so close already, we would try not to beat around the bush. We would always ask each other directly at this point,” Darren concluded.
Darren Espanto’s rumored romantic relationships
Surprisingly, Darren’s interview with Tito Boy was filled with stories about his *friendships* with some other female celebrities. Aside from Cassy and Kyline. Darren is also linked to fellow singer Jayda Avanzado.
Darren described Jayda as one of his friends. However, when Tito Boy pried more into Darren and Jayda’s story, Darren chose to keep that part of his life private for now. However, he admitted to having a romantic connection with Jayda sometime in the past. “Opo, there definitely was.”
“Jayda and I are still friends naman […] For me, it’s something that we’d like to keep private as well, ‘yung mga things from the past,” Darren noted.
Aside from his regular stint on the noontime show, It’s Showtime, Darren is also starring in the hit teleserye Can’t Buy Me Love together with Belle Mariano and Donny Pangilinan.
