‘King the Land’ receives n.eg.ative responses from episode 1 but still reaches the top spot of Netflix’s ‘Global Non-English TV Series’

Junho and YoonA’s romance drama ‘King the Land’ has captivated audiences worldwide.

The show has reached the top spot on Netflix for ‘Global Non-English TV Series’, according to the Netflix TOP 10 website on July 26 KST.

‘King the Land’ has recorded an impressive 4.7 million views and 65.1 million viewing hours for the week of July 17 – 23. It has secured the number one position in the non-English TV category on Netflix. Even when the English content is taken into account, it still remains the overwhelming favorite. In comparison, the third season of ‘Sweet Magnolia’, which ranked first in the English TV category, garnered 4.6 million views and 39.5 million viewing hours.

In the first episode of “King the Land”, which aired on June 17th, Cheon Sa Rang (Yoona) gets her job at King Hotel, the background of the drama, and learns how to manage equipment at the gym inside the hotel.

On the broadcast, a senior told Cheon Sa Rang to wipe the gym equipment, saying “Go and wipe the butt sweat”. When Cheon Sa Rang asked back, “Butt sweat?”, the senior pointed to the wet equipment full of sweat and said, “If you go over there, you’ll see the beautiful butt sweat left by our guests”.

Many netizens frowned at the scene and commented, “I really heard that word for the first time”, “Are people still using that word? Does anyone use it?”, “The lines feel outdated”, “Who actually uses words like that?”, “I remember it was used as a meme”, “I used to work at the gym and we don’t use words like that”, “Just say ‘wipe the sweat’”, etc.

Others pointed out the problems of the script, saying “The storyline is so old-fashioned. I thought I was watching a romcom from the 2000s”, “The writer really mixed all the romcom cliché into this drama?”, “What a waste of time. I even thought there would be some interesting plot twists”, “I’m working at a hotel and I can’t stand watching this drama”, “I only love the couple. Both the script and lines are so boring”, “I’m watching a bad drama after a while”, “Thought I was watching a program from 20 years ago with high resolution”, etc.

Meanwhile, “King the Land” is a romantic comedy about Goo Won (Lee Jun Ho), a chaebol heir who dislikes fake smiles, meeting Cheon Sa Rang (Yoona), a woman who has to smile brightly even when she does not want to.
