Many use hot water in summer to fix a common drain issue
In the summer, many people pour hot water down the drain to address a common household issue. Do you know the reason why? Hot water can solve this problem, which is why many households pour hot water down the drain.
In humid weather or during the hot summer months, bathrooms and toilets often emit unpleasant smells from the drainage pipes. This is an issue that almost all households face, and sometimes small flying insects may even emerge from the drain. So, do you know what to do if you notice this smell coming from your bathroom drain?
Here’s how hot water can help solve the problem:
Step 1: Pour a kettle of hot water down the drain. The high temperature of the water will help kill any small flying insects in the drain.
Step 2: Prepare a bowl and add a little baking soda. Baking soda not only removes grease and other dirt in the drain, but its alkaline properties can also kill any insect eggs in the pipes.
Step 3: Add a little salt into the bowl. Salt has antibacterial properties that help eliminate germs.
Step 4: Add a bit of dish soap into the bowl, add some water, and stir well. Dish soap will not only remove dirt but also kill any small flying insects.
Step 5: Pour the solution into the drain and let it sit for 5 minutes. After this time, pour a kettle of hot water down again to remove any dirt and insects from the drain, eliminating the unpleasant odor.
Other methods to eliminate and prevent bad smells from drains:
Use coffee grounds or air fresheners: Placing used coffee grounds, whole coffee beans, air freshener sachets, or hanging fragrance wax in the bathroom can help mask unpleasant smells coming from the drain. Other materials like tea bags, charcoal, or essential oils can also be used, though these methods are temporary and do not fully solve the problem.
Use drain odor-blocking tools: There are various products available on the market to block drain odors, such as drain odor barriers, silicon deodorizer strips, or silicon drain covers. These can help prevent bad smells and small insects from emerging from the drain.
Alternatively, you can place a bag of water over the drain pipe to achieve similar results
