4 Fish That Seem Healthy but Contain High Mercury Levels – Beware of the First One!

These types of fish may seem nutritious, but they contain high levels of mercury. Be cautious when buying them to avoid potential health risks.

1. Catfish/Snakehead Fish

Vietnam has an abundant supply of catfish and snakehead fish, and they are even exported to other countries. However, when tested for mercury and Malachite Green in the United States, these fish showed positive results. In fact, the U.S. has classified Vietnamese catfish as one of the "dirty" fish to avoid due to contamination risks.

2. Pufferfish

Pufferfish is one of the most dangerous types of fish to consume. Not only does it contain mercury, but it also has deadly toxins that can cause severe poisoning. Pregnant women should absolutely avoid eating pufferfish. The fish contains tetrodotoxin in its ovaries and hepatotoxin in its liver, both of which can be lethal if not prepared correctly.

3. Swordfish

Swordfish is a deep-sea fish known for its high mercury content. Consuming too much of it increases the risk of methylmercury poisoning, which can be harmful to your nervous system. To protect your health, it’s best to limit the intake of this fish.

4. Pacific Bluefin Tuna

While Pacific bluefin tuna is rich in fat and often fed with industrial fish feed to enhance growth, it also comes with risks. This fish is high in calories and saturated fat but low in essential minerals. Farmed tuna also has a lower omega-3 to omega-6 ratio compared to wild-caught fish. Additionally, because tuna lives in deep waters with high levels of heavy metals, excessive consumption increases the risk of mercury exposure.

How to Cook Seafood Safely

Always cook seafood thoroughly – This includes shrimp, fish, and shellfish to eliminate potential toxins.
Buy fresh seafood – Properly clean and store it in the refrigerator if not consumed immediately.
Avoid raw fish dishes – Sushi and sashimi have a higher risk of bacterial contamination.
Pregnant women should follow dietary guidelines – Eat fish in moderation as recommended by doctors to avoid excessive mercury intake.

Being mindful of the types of fish you eat and how they are prepared can protect your health while still allowing you to enjoy delicious seafood!
