4 Plants That Attract Snakes & 3 That Repel Them—What to Grow (and Avoid) in Your Garden

Snakes are a common fear for many people. If you want to keep them away, follow this "4 to avoid, 3 to plant" rule.

4 Plants You Should Avoid Growing in Your Garden

1. Plumbago

This delicate white flower looks charming, making it a popular choice for front yards. However, many people don’t realize that its fragrance is highly attractive to snakes. Since Plumbago blooms year-round, especially in May and June, its scent travels far, luring snakes into your home environment. If you have this plant in your garden, it’s best to remove it immediately to avoid any potential danger.

2. Chinese Knotweed

Although its name sounds similar to Plumbago, Chinese Knotweed is an entirely different plant, also known as "White Snake Tongue." This plant thrives in damp areas and produces small, star-shaped white flowers. According to folklore, where this plant grows, snakes are often found nearby. To avoid unwanted snake visits, it's best not to plant it in your yard.

3. Purple Cardamom

While Purple Cardamom isn’t particularly attractive in appearance, it is valued for its medicinal properties, treating ailments such as bloating, diarrhea, and toothaches. However, this plant produces a sweet scent that attracts rodents like mice, squirrels, and porcupines—favorite prey for snakes. As a result, snakes often frequent areas where Purple Cardamom is grown, making it an undesirable plant for your garden.

4. Fragrant Flowering Plants

Common aromatic plants such as night-blooming cereus, jasmine, and lemongrass can also attract snakes due to their strong scents. Additionally, vine-growing plants that provide shady spaces, like bougainvillea and telosma cordata (hoa lý), create ideal hiding spots for green pit vipers and other snake species.

3 Plants That Repel Snakes

1. Kudzu Vine

Also known as pueraria root or kudzu, this plant is well-known for its snake-repelling properties. The sap released by kudzu can deter snakes, making it a great natural solution for keeping them away.

2. Lemongrass

Lemongrass is a tall, perennial grass that grows in clusters and is widely used in cooking and herbal remedies. Besides its culinary and medicinal benefits, lemongrass emits a strong scent that repels snakes. Planting it in your garden, balcony, or terrace can help create a snake-free environment.

3. Snake Plant

A popular indoor plant, Snake Plant (also known as Sansevieria) is loved for its low-maintenance care and air-purifying properties. More importantly, it is a well-known snake deterrent. Gardens with snake plants rarely attract snakes, making it an excellent choice for a safer outdoor space.

By choosing the right plants, you can reduce the risk of attracting snakes while keeping your garden beautiful and safe!
