Mr. Liang Han (59, from China) ate 2–3 bananas every evening because he believed the fruit was good for heart health.
Mr. Liang shared that about a year ago, he read an article claiming that regularly eating bananas was beneficial for cardiovascular health. Since then, he started the habit of eating 2–3 bananas after dinner every day, hoping to improve his nutrition and prevent heart disease.
He maintained this routine consistently for an entire year. Recently, his son took him to a local hospital for a regular health check-up.
After completing the necessary tests and examinations, Mr. Liang went into the consultation room to hear the doctor’s evaluation. The doctor said, “Your health condition is very good, and all your indicators are stable.”
Hearing the results made Mr. Liang extremely happy. However, he mentioned that he often experienced bloating at night for no clear reason. He also told the doctor that he had been eating 2–3 bananas every evening over the past year and wondered whether this habit had affected his health.
Regarding Mr. Liang’s daily banana-eating habit, the doctor explained: “Bananas are highly nutritious fruits, rich in potassium and vitamin B6, two nutrients that are beneficial for heart health.”
According to the doctor, the potassium in bananas helps the body eliminate excess sodium, which can help control blood pressure and reduce strain on the cardiovascular system. Potassium also supports healthy blood circulation, helping protect the heart.
Vitamin B6 in bananas is also important because it helps the body produce coenzyme Q10, a nutrient essential for heart health. Coenzyme Q10 has strong antioxidant properties that protect heart cells from damage caused by free radicals and may help slow heart aging.
“It’s true that potassium in bananas can help regulate blood pressure and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, eating too many bananas at night may cause digestive problems. Bananas contain soluble fiber and sorbitol — a type of carbohydrate similar to sugar alcohol — which can lead to bloating, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhea if consumed in excess, especially in older adults whose digestive systems become less efficient with age,” the doctor continued.
The doctor added that since Mr. Liang usually ate bananas at night and experienced bloating, this could also affect the quality of his sleep and indirectly impact his overall health.
To address the issue, the doctor advised Mr. Liang to reduce his intake to one banana per day and eat it after breakfast or lunch instead. This would still provide nutritional benefits while reducing the burden on his digestive system.
Finally, the doctor emphasized that Mr. Liang should not “overestimate” the heart-protective effects of bananas alone. To improve cardiovascular health and overall well-being, he should maintain a balanced diet, eat a variety of foods, reduce salt, sugar, and fat intake, and exercise regularly.
