Doctor Reveals the Horrifying Reason Why You Should Never Pee in the Shower

Urinating in the shower might seem harmless—or even efficient—but according to a bladder health specialist, it could be training your brain and body in unhealthy ways.

What’s the Big Deal?

Dr. Teresa Irwin, a urogynecologist, warns that peeing in the shower could disrupt the natural signals your brain associates with urination. “If you regularly urinate while hearing the sound of running water,” she explains, “your brain can start to link the two together.”

Over time, this may lead to something known as "urge incontinence"—a condition where your bladder reacts prematurely to triggers like the sound of water, even if it’s not full.

Your Bladder Is Learning Habits Too

The human body is highly adaptable. Just like muscle memory, the bladder can develop patterns based on routine. Peeing in the shower regularly could unintentionally teach your body to feel the urge to urinate in inappropriate situations—like during hand washing or while running water in the kitchen.

Additional Concerns

While the habit may not be dangerous for everyone, it can be particularly problematic for:

  • People prone to urinary urgency

  • Those with pelvic floor dysfunction

  • Anyone trying to retrain their bladder

What Should You Do Instead?

  • Stick to using the toilet for urination.

  • Try pelvic floor exercises (like Kegels) if you experience bladder control issues.

  • Pay attention to any changes in urination habits and consult a urologist if needed.
