Doctors’ Warning After a Tragic De.ath: Don’t Drink These 4 Types of Water Before Sleeping Even If You’re Thirsty

Many people think, “It’s just water. It can’t be harmful.” But in reality, not all “water-like” drinks are safe before bed. Some can raise blood pressure, trigger nighttime urination, worsen reflux, or cause dangerous blood sugar swings. Here are four types of drinks doctors frequently recommend avoiding at night—and safer alternatives.

1) Sugary “Vitamin Water” or Sweetened Flavored Water

Flavored waters often look healthy, but many contain added sugar, syrups, or artificial sweeteners. Drinking these before bed can cause:

  • Blood sugar spikes and crashes

  • Increased thirst overnight

  • Sleep disruption

  • Weight gain over time

For people with diabetes or insulin resistance, nighttime sugar intake may increase risks and worsen morning fatigue.

Better choice: Plain water, or water infused with lemon slices (no sugar).

2) “Detox Water” or Herbal Water With Strong Diuretic Effects

Some popular “detox” waters contain ingredients like dandelion, parsley, or other diuretic herbs. While these may be fine earlier in the day, at night they can:

  • Trigger frequent urination

  • Cause dehydration

  • Reduce sleep quality

  • Lower electrolyte balance in sensitive individuals

If your body loses too much water overnight, the heart must work harder to circulate blood, especially in older adults.

Better choice: A small glass of room-temperature water, sipped slowly.

3) Salt-Heavy Mineral Water or Electrolyte Water

Electrolyte drinks and some mineral waters can contain high sodium levels. At night, too much sodium may contribute to:

  • Fluid retention

  • Swelling

  • Increased blood pressure

  • Extra workload on the kidneys

This can be especially risky for people with hypertension, heart disease, or kidney problems.

Better choice: Low-sodium water or plain filtered water.

4) “Water” Mixed With Alcohol or Caffeine

Some people drink alcohol mixed with soda water, or caffeinated sparkling water, believing it’s lighter. However:

  • Alcohol can lower oxygen levels during sleep

  • It increases heart rate and dehydration

  • Caffeine can cause insomnia and palpitations

  • Both can worsen acid reflux

In vulnerable individuals, these effects may contribute to dangerous nighttime events.

Better choice: Warm water, chamomile tea (non-diuretic), or caffeine-free herbal tea.

What Should You Drink Before Bed Instead?

If you truly feel thirsty at night, doctors often suggest:

  • A few sips of plain water (not a full bottle)

  • Warm water to calm digestion

  • Caffeine-free tea in small amounts

  • Keeping your room humidified if dry air causes thirst

A helpful tip: if you constantly wake up thirsty, it may be a sign of high blood sugar, sleep apnea, or dehydration during the day—so it’s better to address the root cause.

When to See a Doctor Immediately

If you experience any of the following, seek medical help urgently:

  • Chest pain or pressure

  • Severe shortness of breath

  • Sudden dizziness or fainting

  • Rapid heartbeat

  • Confusion or weakness
