Don’t Be Fooled by the Sweet Taste – 5 Fruits That Can Send Your Blo.od Fat Levels Out of Control!

Eating durian, jackfruit, ripe mango, longan, lychee, and dried fruits can cause a sudden spike in blood sugar and make it difficult to control cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Master of Medicine, Dr. Doan Vinh Binh, from the Medical Information Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, advises people with high blood lipids (hyperlipidemia) to limit the following fruits to better manage their condition:

Durian:
100 g of durian contains about 150 kcal and 25 g of sugar. Overeating can raise triglyceride levels. Patients should limit consumption to only 1–2 small segments per month to maintain stable blood fat levels.

Jackfruit:
165 g of jackfruit provides more than 150 kcal and 38 g of sugar. Due to its high sugar and calorie content, eating jackfruit on an empty stomach may cause a rapid rise in blood sugar, worsening lipid disorders.

Ripe Mango:
Each 100 g of ripe mango contains around 60 kcal and 13.7 g of sugar. This fruit can easily raise blood fat and sugar levels if consumed excessively. Patients should opt for green or semi-ripe mangoes, which are lower in sugar and higher in fiber, to help control blood lipids and body weight.

Longan and Lychee:
These tropical fruits are rich in sugar and calories. It’s best not to consume more than 9 lychees per day and to combine them with low-sugar fruits to maintain nutritional balance.

Dried Fruits:
Dates, apples, persimmons, and raisins have had their water removed, making them much higher in sugar and calories than fresh fruits. Overeating dried fruits can raise triglycerides and make weight control difficult. People with high blood fat levels should choose fresh fruits instead.

Dr. Binh recommends that individuals with hyperlipidemia follow a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and have periodic health check-ups. They should include citrus fruits and low-sugar, high-fiber fruits such as grapefruit, apples, or dragon fruit in their daily meals to support cholesterol control.

Additionally, incorporating natural ingredients like policosanol (GDL-5) extracted from South American sugarcane wax can help reduce total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol while increasing HDL cholesterol, effectively supporting lipid regulation.
