Don't Put Your Washing Machine on the Balcony! A Costly Lesson Learned

Don't Put Your Washing Machine on the Balcony! A Costly Lesson Learned

In the past, most households placed their washing machines directly in the bathroom for convenience. However, more and more people have started placing their washing machines on the balcony. But is this actually a good idea?

What Problems Can Arise from Moving the Washing Machine to the Balcony?

1. Space Limitations

Since balconies are usually smaller, space becomes a constraint, which can limit the size and functionality of the washing machine.

For large washing machines, the balcony may not have enough space to accommodate them. Even if they fit, the lack of space can affect the machine’s performance and efficiency.

For example, a large washing machine requires more water to clean clothes properly. If the balcony does not have enough space for a large washing machine or additional water storage, frequent refilling will be necessary, leading to wasted time and energy.

Furthermore, if the balcony lacks sufficient load-bearing capacity, placing a heavy washing machine on it could damage the structural integrity of the building. Therefore, before deciding to place a washing machine on the balcony, it is essential to consider the balcony’s structure and load capacity.

2. Drainage Issues

One of the biggest drawbacks of placing a washing machine on the balcony is drainage. Since the balcony's drainage system is often connected to the house's plumbing, placing the washing machine there could cause conflicts with the existing drainage pipes.

This could lead to poor drainage or even overflow, causing inconvenience for the household. If the balcony’s drainage system fails, it could also affect the normal operation of the washing machine.

In severe cases, drainage problems may damage your washing machine. If your washing machine frequently uses hot water, placing it on the balcony could lead to additional issues.

Hot water can create steam, which might cause malfunctions in the balcony's drainage system or even lead to broken pipes.

3. Sun Protection Issues

Sun exposure is another major concern. Direct sunlight on the washing machine can accelerate the aging of plastic components, shortening the machine’s lifespan.

Strong sunlight can also damage the washing machine’s electronic components, increasing the risk of malfunctions.

To address this issue, you can take protective measures such as installing an awning or a sunshade on the balcony to reduce direct sunlight exposure.
