A doctor has issued urgent advice for people this winter amid the 'quad-demic', which is the simultaneous occurrence of flu, RSV, norovirus and COVID-19. In the past day alone, searches for 'flu symptoms' have skyrocketed by 5,000%, with people sharing tips and ways to avoid them on social media.

However, one tip that has gone viral – with 30 million posts – is being backed by health experts. Health experts at Landys Chemist have analysed the trend of switching from over-the-counter medicines to home remedies this winter, and have outlined the key benefits of garlic and honey in preventing colds and flu symptoms.

Fermented garlic honey is a natural remedy made by steeping fresh garlic in honey, allowing them to ferment together over time.

Rhysa Phommachanh, health expert at Landys, explains why garlic and honey are essential winter health foods: "Both garlic and honey have proven benefits throughout the year, but are particularly beneficial to our health in winter. Garlic is rich in prebiotic fibre insulin, which supports gut health, and is thought to have antibacterial and antiviral properties that help fight illness and reduce cold symptoms. Honey, rich in antioxidants such as flavonoids and polyphenols, helps balance the immune system and prevent illness." According to clevelandclinic, a study of 41,000 women aged 55 to 69 found that those who regularly ate garlic, fruit and vegetables had a 35% lower risk of developing colon cancer. The benefits of garlic don't stop there, it's also good for the heart. “Research also suggests that garlic may have a positive effect on arteries and blood pressure,” the experts add. “Researchers believe that red blood cells convert the sulfur in garlic into hydrogen sulfide gas.

“This helps dilate blood vessels, making it easier to regulate blood pressure. However, before you ditch your blood pressure medication, talk to your doctor to see if adding garlic to your diet could benefit you.”
