Then the Stories Started Growing

As the reports circulated, so did the descriptions.

A bird became an enormous bird.

An enormous bird became something resembling a giant eagle.

A large wingspan became a wingspan wider than a car.

This is not necessarily evidence that anyone was deliberately exaggerating.

Human memory is complicated.

When people discuss a surprising event with one another, their memories can influence each other. Details that were uncertain at first can become more vivid with every retelling.

A witness may initially remember seeing “a very large bird.”

After hearing someone else describe a ten-foot wingspan, that number may become part of the story.

Over time, the event can become larger in memory than it was in reality.

Yet that psychological possibility does not mean that everyone saw nothing.

It simply means that the interpretation of the event may be less reliable than the basic observation.

Something was seen.

The question is what it actually was.

Wildlife Experts Had Several Possible Explanations

When biologists and wildlife specialists heard about the reports, they approached the claims with understandable skepticism.

A creature with a truly gigantic wingspan would be extraordinary.

The largest flying birds known today are impressive, but there are physical limits on how large a bird can become while remaining capable of sustained flight.

That immediately makes the idea of an enormous eagle worthy of caution.

Instead of assuming that an unknown giant species had appeared, experts would naturally consider more ordinary explanations first.

Perhaps the bird was a familiar species viewed from an unusual angle.

Perhaps it was farther away than witnesses realized.

Perhaps atmospheric conditions distorted its appearance.

Or perhaps multiple birds were involved.

The Problem With Judging Size in the Sky

One of the simplest explanations is also one of the most powerful:

People are surprisingly bad at estimating the size and distance of an object in an empty sky.

Imagine holding a small coin at arm's length.

Depending on the distance and angle, it can appear to cover part of a much larger object behind it.

The same basic principle applies to birds.

Without a familiar object beside the bird, there is no reliable reference point.

A bird several hundred feet away can look enormous if its wings are fully spread.

And if the observer is already surprised by the sight, the brain may interpret the unusual silhouette as something much larger than it really is.

This is especially true when the bird is moving.

The observer has only a few seconds to judge:

• How high it is

• How far away it is

• How wide its wings are

• How fast it is moving

• What species it might be

Those estimates can easily be wrong.

The Camera Was Supposed to Settle the Question

In the age of smartphones, strange sightings often produce photographic evidence almost immediately.

Witnesses reportedly reached for their phones when they saw the bird.

But there was a problem.

The sky was bright.

The bird was distant.

And smartphone cameras are not particularly good at capturing tiny, fast-moving subjects against a bright background without preparation.

The resulting photographs, when available, reportedly showed little more than distant shapes or specks.

To the person who took the photograph, the object may have been unmistakably enormous in person.

But once reduced to a tiny mark on a screen, the image became almost impossible to analyze.

There was no clear feather pattern.

No identifiable head.

No reliable measurement of the wings.

No distinctive markings.

No close-up image capable of settling the debate.

And without those details, the photographs could not provide a definitive answer.

Biologists Asked the Questions That Mattered

Wildlife experts looking into an unusual bird report would want much more than an estimate of its size.

They would want to know exactly what witnesses observed.

What direction was the bird traveling?

How long was it visible?
