How high did it appear to be?
Was it flapping or gliding?
What was the shape of the wings?
Was the tail long or short?
Was the body bulky or slender?
What color did it appear to be?
Did it make any sound?
Was it alone?
Were there buildings, trees, vehicles, or other objects nearby that could provide a scale reference?
These details can sometimes transform a mysterious sighting into a recognizable species.
But when witnesses see an animal for only a few seconds, many of those details are impossible to recover accurately.

Several Familiar Birds Could Look Surprisingly Huge
South Texas provides plenty of opportunities for mistaken identification.
Turkey vultures, for example, can appear remarkably large when gliding overhead.
Their broad wings and habit of soaring without frequent wingbeats can create an imposing silhouette.
Pelicans can also appear enormous, particularly when viewed against an open sky.
Large raptors can look dramatically bigger when they are closer than the observer realizes.
Even a bird that is not exceptionally large can appear gigantic when viewed from below and without a nearby reference point.
Then there is another possibility:
The bird may simply have been an unusual individual.
A particularly large specimen of a known species can look extraordinary without representing an entirely unknown creature.
That possibility would fit the basic pattern of the sightings while avoiding the need to introduce a mysterious new species.
The Ten-Foot Wingspan Question
The claim of a wingspan approaching ten feet is one of the most dramatic elements of the story.
But it is also one of the hardest claims to verify.
To establish a wingspan accurately, an observer would need some reliable way to estimate the animal's distance and compare it with a known object or measurement.
Simply looking at a bird overhead is not enough.
A bird flying closer to the observer will naturally appear much larger than the same bird at a greater distance.
Without knowing the distance, apparent size cannot reliably be converted into actual size.
This is why scientists generally place much more weight on photographs with recognizable scale, physical specimens, measurements, or repeated observations by trained observers.
Without those things, a reported ten-foot wingspan remains an estimate—not a measurement.
Heat, Light, and Distance Can Transform a Silhouette
South Texas can also present challenging viewing conditions.
Heat shimmer near the ground can distort distant objects.
Bright sunlight can create strong silhouettes.
Clouds, haze, and atmospheric conditions can alter contrast.
When a bird is seen against the sun, its feathers and body markings may disappear entirely.
The viewer may see only the outer shape of the wings.
That silhouette can then become the foundation for an interpretation.
A familiar bird suddenly looks unfamiliar.
A familiar bird viewed from an unusual angle can seem almost mythical.
And when the encounter lasts only seconds, there may be no opportunity to reconsider the first impression.
But Some Witnesses Remained Convinced
Despite the possible explanations, not everyone was satisfied.
For the people who actually saw the creature, the experience felt real.
They remembered its size.
They remembered the way it moved.
They remembered the shadow.
And most importantly, they remembered the feeling of looking upward and realizing that whatever was flying above them seemed far larger than anything they expected to see.
That emotional memory can be powerful.
An ordinary bird sighting is quickly forgotten.
A bird that appears larger than a vehicle is not.
The more unusual the experience, the more strongly it can remain in someone's memory.
The Search Produced No Definitive Answer
As interest increased, people naturally wanted evidence.
Was there a nest?
Were there feathers?
Could anyone locate the bird?
Was an injured animal discovered?
