4. Close Doors and Windows While Cooling

An air conditioner works most efficiently when it does not have to fight a constant flow of hot outdoor air.

Leaving windows open while the unit is operating allows warm, humid air to enter. The air conditioner must then remove additional heat and moisture to maintain the desired indoor conditions.

Open doors can create a similar problem, especially when the cooled room connects directly to a hot hallway or outdoor area.

To avoid wasting energy, close windows and exterior doors while cooling the room. If possible, concentrate cooling in the spaces you actually use rather than trying to cool the entire home unnecessarily.

For example, if you spend most of the afternoon in the living room, there may be little benefit in cooling unused bedrooms to the same temperature.

However, keeping a room closed does not mean ignoring ventilation. Homes still need adequate fresh air, and cooking, bathing, and other activities can create indoor pollutants or excess moisture. Ventilate appropriately when outdoor conditions are suitable, and use kitchen or bathroom exhaust fans when needed.

If your home has central air conditioning, follow the system's guidance regarding interior doors and airflow. Some systems require specific return-air pathways to function correctly.

The goal is to reduce unnecessary heat entering the cooled space without compromising indoor air quality.

5. Block Direct Sunlight Before It Heats Your Home

Sunlight entering through windows can significantly increase indoor temperatures, particularly during the afternoon.

When sunlight strikes floors, furniture, and walls, those surfaces absorb heat and release it into the room. The air conditioner then has to remove that additional heat.

One of the simplest ways to reduce this problem is to use curtains, blinds, or external shading.

During the hottest part of the day, close curtains or blinds on windows receiving direct sunlight. Light-colored or reflective window coverings can be particularly useful because they reflect more solar radiation than dark, heat-absorbing materials.

External shading can be even more effective in suitable locations. Awnings, exterior blinds, shutters, and strategically placed shade trees can prevent sunlight from reaching the glass in the first place.

If you are considering new curtains, look for products designed to reduce solar heat gain. Thermal or blackout curtains can help, although their performance depends on the material, fit, and window construction.

Pay particular attention to west-facing windows, which often receive strong afternoon sunlight.

You do not necessarily need to keep every curtain closed all day. During cooler mornings or evenings, opening suitable windows may help release accumulated heat if outdoor conditions are favorable.

A little planning can reduce the amount of heat entering the house and make the air conditioner’s job easier.

6. Choose the Right Air Conditioner for Your Room

An air conditioner that is too small or too large for the space can create efficiency and comfort problems.

A unit that is undersized may run for long periods without adequately cooling the room during very hot weather. It may struggle to maintain the desired temperature, particularly when sunlight, poor insulation, or multiple occupants increase the cooling load.

An oversized unit can also be problematic. Some conventional systems may cool the air rapidly and switch off before running long enough to remove sufficient moisture, leaving the room feeling cool but humid. Frequent starting and stopping can reduce comfort and may affect efficiency.

The correct cooling capacity depends on several factors, including:

  • The floor area and ceiling height.

  • The number, size, and orientation of windows.

  • The amount of direct sunlight.

  • The quality of insulation and air sealing.

  • The local climate and outdoor humidity.

  • The number of people regularly occupying the room.

  • Heat produced by computers, televisions, cooking equipment, and other appliances.

For this reason, choosing a unit based only on room area can be misleading.

If you are purchasing a new air conditioner, ask a qualified installer to assess the cooling load and recommend an appropriately sized system.

A properly selected unit is more likely to provide consistent comfort without excessive energy consumption.

7. Consider an Inverter Air Conditioner

If you are shopping for a new air conditioner, an inverter model may be worth considering.

Traditional non-inverter systems generally operate at a relatively fixed compressor speed, switching on and off to maintain the desired temperature.

Inverter systems can vary compressor speed according to the cooling demand. Once the room approaches the target temperature, the compressor may reduce its output rather than repeatedly operating at full capacity.

This can improve temperature stability, reduce frequent compressor cycling, and lower electricity consumption under suitable operating conditions.

However, an inverter air conditioner is not automatically the cheapest option in every situation. Its efficiency depends on the specific model, operating conditions, installation quality, and how the system is used.

When comparing products, look beyond the word "inverter."

Check the energy-efficiency label, rated power consumption, cooling capacity, and available seasonal efficiency ratings. Compare models of similar capacity and consider the expected number of operating hours.

A more efficient unit may cost more initially but could offer lower operating costs over several years.

For households that use air conditioning daily during long, hot seasons, this difference may be particularly relevant.

If you already own a functioning air conditioner, however, replacing it solely because it is not an inverter model may not be financially worthwhile. Compare the purchase cost, expected savings, and remaining lifespan of your existing equipment before deciding.

8. Use Sleep Mode or a Suitable Timer at Night

Nighttime is an excellent opportunity to reduce unnecessary cooling.

As outdoor temperatures fall, your home may require less cooling to remain comfortable. Yet an air conditioner left at an unnecessarily low setting can continue operating longer than needed.
