The Role of Circulation
One of the most common reasons for ankle swelling is poor circulation.
Healthy veins carry blood from the legs back toward the heart. To accomplish this, veins rely on small valves that prevent blood from flowing backward.
Over time, these valves can weaken. When this occurs, fluid may begin to pool in the lower legs, causing visible swelling.
Symptoms associated with circulation problems may include:
- Aching legs
- Heaviness
- Visible veins
- Cramping
- Skin changes around the ankles
