If You See These Tiny Insects in Your Bathroom, Here’s What They May Be Trying to Tell You

If you have ever walked into your bathroom and noticed a group of tiny, fuzzy insects resting around the sink, shower, or bathtub, you may have wondered where they came from.

They look almost like miniature moths, with small bodies and broad, hairy wings. When disturbed, they often make short, weak flights rather than flying quickly like ordinary houseflies.

The insects shown in the image are consistent with drain flies, also called moth flies. They are commonly found in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and other areas where moisture and drains are present.

The good news is that seeing a few drain flies usually does not mean your home is dangerously dirty.

But they can provide an important clue:

Somewhere nearby, there may be a persistently damp area containing organic buildup where these insects are breeding.

What Are Drain Flies?

Drain flies are tiny insects belonging to the family Psychodidae.

They are usually only a few millimeters long, but their appearance makes them easy to recognize. Their wings are covered with fine hairs, giving them a fuzzy or moth-like appearance.

They are sometimes mistaken for tiny moths.

Unlike many flying insects that enter homes from outdoors, drain flies can establish populations inside buildings, particularly around plumbing fixtures.

You may find them resting on:

• Sink basins
• Shower walls
• Bathtubs
• Floors near drains
• Kitchen sinks
• Laundry-room drains
• Floor drains

They are especially common in places where moisture remains for long periods.

Why Are They Suddenly Appearing?

If you suddenly notice several drain flies, the insects may be responding to conditions inside a drain or another consistently damp location.

Adult drain flies are not usually the main problem.

The bigger issue is what is happening where their larvae develop.

Drain-fly larvae can live in the moist organic material that accumulates inside drains and plumbing areas.

This material can include things such as:

Hair

Soap residue

Grease

Food particles

Skin cells
