Kidney Failure: Dangerous Complications and Early Warning Signs Young People Shouldn’t Ignore

The complications of kidney failure are extremely dangerous and can be life-threatening. That’s why prevention is absolutely essential.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, Vietnam reports around 8,000 new kidney disease cases each year. Currently, approximately 5 million people across the country suffer from varying degrees of kidney failure, with about 26,000 requiring dialysis.

Alongside the increasing number of kidney disease patients, the number of young people developing kidney failure is also on the rise. Many are only diagnosed with end-stage chronic kidney disease during routine health check-ups for work or regular screenings.

Health experts warn that many harmful chemicals are being used to preserve a wide range of food products today. The nutrients our bodies absorb are primarily metabolized and excreted through the liver and kidneys. As a result, these foods can gradually impair liver and kidney function. Moreover, modern youth tend to be physically inactive, exposed to toxic work environments, consume unsafe food, and abuse alcohol. An unhealthy diet and lifestyle can lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, and eventually kidney failure.

Early detection is crucial for effective treatment and recovery.

Early Signs of Kidney Failure to Watch For

1. Fatigue and Weakness
Nearly all chronic kidney failure patients experience anemia. This leads to reduced kidney function—only 20% to 50% of normal efficiency. If you're constantly tired despite getting enough rest, it could be a warning sign of kidney issues.

2. Shortness of Breath
When the kidneys fail to filter waste effectively, red blood cell production is impaired. This can cause fluid retention and reduce lung function. Fewer red blood cells also mean less oxygen is transported through the body.

3. Bad Breath
A buildup of waste in the blood can cause bad breath and a metallic taste in the mouth. This is often mistaken for dental issues.

4. Itchy Skin
When the kidneys can’t filter toxins properly, waste accumulates in the blood and can trigger rashes and itchy skin. Take note if you develop persistent skin irritation.

5. Lower Back Pain
Pain that starts in the lower back and radiates to the sides or pelvic area could indicate early-stage kidney failure.

6. Swelling (Edema)
When the kidneys can’t eliminate waste properly, fluid builds up in the body, causing swelling in the legs, hands, and face.

7. Abnormal Urination
Kidney dysfunction directly affects urination. Watch for changes such as increased or decreased frequency, unusual color or smell, or blood in the urine.

8. Loud and Prolonged Snoring
Chronic kidney failure can lead to sleep apnea—a condition where breathing stops momentarily during sleep. These pauses may last a few seconds to a minute, followed by loud, prolonged snoring.

Effective Ways to Prevent Kidney Failure

  • Adopt a Healthy Lifestyle: Exercise daily to maintain a healthy weight and improve overall health. Regularly monitor your blood pressure, uric acid, and cholesterol levels. Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and stimulants.

  • Maintain a Balanced Diet: Reduce your intake of salt, protein, and fatty foods. Eat more vegetables and fruits beneficial to your health. Don’t forget to drink 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day.

  • Regular Health Checkups: Visit your doctor every six months or immediately if you notice signs of declining kidney function. Early diagnosis leads to better treatment outcomes.
