Mosquitoes cause numerous problems for humans. Their bites lead to itching and can transmit diseases such as dengue fever and malaria. At night, the buzzing sound of mosquitoes can also disrupt sleep.

To repel mosquitoes, many people turn to mosquito coils. While effective, these coils may carry certain safety risks. They often contain chemicals, and the long-term effects of regular exposure to these substances on human health remain uncertain. Instead of using mosquito coils, you can opt for natural ingredients already in your home to keep mosquitoes at bay.

Natural Ways to Repel Mosquitoes

1. Use Soap, Detergent, and Sugar

You can combine soap, laundry detergent, and sugar to repel mosquitoes.

First, cut a bar of soap into small pieces to help it dissolve in water. Place the soap in a bowl, add a little detergent (or liquid laundry soap), and some sugar. The exact ratio isn’t critical—you can go with a 1:1:1 ratio if needed. Add water and stir until everything is fully dissolved.

Place the bowl in areas where mosquitoes are common, such as room corners, doorways, bathrooms, or places with a lot of greenery. The scent from the sugar and detergent will attract mosquitoes, while the soap and detergent mixture will kill them.

This solution also works well against cockroaches and flies.

2. Use Mugwort (Artemisia)

Mugwort is a familiar herb in many households and is known for its health benefits. It has a distinctive scent that effectively repels mosquitoes. You can dry the leaves and burn them to smoke out a room. The aroma released by burning mugwort drives mosquitoes away.

Place the burning mugwort in a bowl on a tray and carry it around the house to spread the scent as widely as possible—focus on dark corners, under beds, or in bathrooms.

Note: Always open windows or doors for ventilation during this process to avoid suffocation. Also, keep a close eye to ensure the fire doesn’t spread to nearby objects.

In addition to repelling mosquitoes, mugwort helps purify the air and eliminate unpleasant odors. Its calming scent also promotes relaxation and better sleep.

3. Mugwort and Menthol Oil Pouches

You can make mosquito-repelling sachets using mugwort and menthol oil. Take a disposable face mask, cut one end, and stuff it with dried mugwort. Add a few drops of menthol oil and tie the opening securely.

Hang the sachet near your bed, windows, or doors. The combined scent of mugwort and menthol is strongly disliked by mosquitoes, keeping them away from your home.

4. Make Your Own Mosquito Repellent Spray

You can create a natural mosquito spray using simple ingredients. Take a container, high-proof alcohol, and aromatic herbs such as mint leaves, mugwort, honeysuckle flowers, rosemary, lemongrass, etc. These herbs have a pleasant smell to humans but are natural enemies of mosquitoes.

Just place the herbs into the container and pour in enough alcohol to cover them completely.

Seal the container and store it in a cool place for about 7 days. Over time, the herbal essence will infuse into the alcohol, which will turn a jade green color. At that point, strain the liquid and pour it into a spray bottle.

Spray this solution on your skin to prevent mosquito bites. You can also spray it in areas where mosquitoes frequently gather.
