Then something unexpected happened.
The young man slowly reached into his pocket.
Emma touched his arm.
"What are you doing?"
He didn't answer.
He unlocked his phone and tapped the screen several times.
Then he walked toward the dining table.
Without saying a word, he placed the phone faceup directly in front of Daniel.
Emma's mother couldn't see the screen from where she was standing.
But Daniel could.
The effect was immediate.
The color drained from his face.
His expression changed from anger to something closer to fear.
"Put that away," he said quietly.
The young man didn't move.
"Put it away."
For the first time that evening, Daniel sounded nervous.
Everyone in the room noticed it.
Emma looked confused.
"What is on that phone?"
Nobody answered.
Daniel suddenly grabbed the device and flipped it face down before anyone else could see the display.
"What is going on?" Emma's mother demanded.
Still, Daniel refused to explain.
His silence only made the situation more unsettling.
The young man then looked directly at Emma's mother.
His voice was calm.
"Maybe you should ask him why he doesn't want you to see it."
The statement hung in the air.
Emma looked at her father.
Her father looked away.
And in that moment, it became obvious that whatever appeared on that phone was not something Daniel wanted the rest of the family to know.
The evening had suddenly transformed from a simple introduction into something entirely different.
Questions flooded everyone's mind.
Had the two men met before?
Did they share some connection from the past?
Was the image on the phone evidence of a misunderstanding—or proof of a secret?
Nobody knew.
But one thing was clear.
Daniel's reaction had nothing to do with tattoos, eyeliner, or black clothing.
