My Parents Chose My Sister’s Career Over Mine — Years Later, She Asked Me for a Job
Chapter 1
When my parents told me they couldn't afford to support both of our dreams, I thought they would choose the one that needed them most.
I was wrong.
They chose my sister.
She got the college tuition.
She got the connections.
She got the family car.
And when I asked what would happen to my own plans, my mother simply said:
“Your sister has a better chance of making something of herself.”
I never forgot those words.
But I also never imagined that, years later, my sister would walk into my office, sit across from my desk, and quietly ask me for a job.
They Said I Could Wait. She Couldn't.
My sister, Claire, was two years younger than me.
Growing up, we were close.
We shared a bedroom for years, borrowed each other's clothes, and stayed up late talking about the lives we wanted when we grew up.
Claire dreamed of becoming a fashion designer.
I wanted to build a career in marketing and eventually start my own creative agency.
Neither dream seemed more important than the other.
Then our father lost his job.
Money became tight.
College applications arrived at almost the same time.
One evening, my parents sat us down at the kitchen table.
Dad looked exhausted.
“We can only afford to fully support one of you right now,” he said.
I remember looking at Claire.
She looked terrified.
I reached across the table and squeezed her hand.
I thought Mom and Dad would find some compromise.
Instead, Mom turned to me.
“You've always been more independent,” she said.
I didn't understand.
“What does that mean?”
“You can work for a few years and go to college later.”
Then she looked at Claire.
“Your sister has a real opportunity. We can't let it pass.”
I stared at them.
“So you're paying for her school?”
Dad nodded.
“And I'm supposed to figure mine out myself?”
Mom hesitated.
“You're capable of doing that.”
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I quietly said:
“Okay.”
That single word changed our relationship forever.
Claire went to a prestigious design school.
I stayed home.
I worked two jobs.
During the day, I worked at a small printing company.
At night, I waited tables.
I took online marketing courses whenever I had enough money to pay for them.
I learned everything I could.
Social media.
Branding.
Advertising.
Copywriting.
Graphic design.
Business strategy.
I didn't have professors guiding me.
I didn't have expensive equipment.
I had an old laptop and a stubborn refusal to give up.
Claire, meanwhile, was living the life we'd once dreamed about together.
And I tried to be happy for her.
My Sister Got the Head Start I Never Had
For the first few years, Claire did well.
She graduated with honors.
Mom and Dad were incredibly proud.
They framed her graduation photo and put it in the living room.
They told everyone about her internships.
When she got her first job at a well-known fashion company, Mom called me immediately.
“Your sister is finally getting the recognition she deserves!”
I smiled.
“That's great, Mom.”
But there was something nobody talked about.
Claire wasn't happy.
Her first job wasn't what she expected.
She was buried under deadlines.
Her ideas were constantly rejected.
The company changed direction.
Then came layoffs.
Claire survived the first round.
She didn't survive the second.
She called me one night.
“I lost my job.”
I sat quietly on my apartment floor.
“I'm sorry.”
“I don't know what I'm going to do.”
“You'll figure it out.”
There was a long silence.
Then she asked:
“How did you get through all those years?”
I knew what she meant.
“How did you build your career without going to college?”
