Not Just Sweets: 7 Foods That Can Spike Your Blo.od Sugar
People with high blo.od sugar should avoid the following foods.
White Rice
Many believe that only sugary foods cause blood sugar spikes, but rice is high in starch, which converts into sugar once digested. This is why blood sugar levels can rise significantly after eating white rice. To maintain good health, it's important to follow a balanced diet. If you have diabetes, limit your white rice intake and replace it with fresh vegetables.
High-Sugar Fruits
Fruits like durian, mango, and jackfruit contain high levels of natural sugar. Eating them in large quantities can lead to blood sugar spikes.
If you have diabetes, it's best to limit these fruits and opt for healthier alternatives like grapefruit, oranges, strawberries, plums, avocados, and pomegranates.
Beetroot
While beetroot is rich in antioxidants that can benefit overall health and slow aging, it is not ideal for those with diabetes. The high sugar content in beets can negatively impact blood sugar levels.
Sugarcane
Sugarcane is naturally sweet and loved by many, but it contains a high amount of sucrose, which can cause blood sugar to spike rapidly. To maintain stable blood sugar levels, it should be consumed in moderation, and people with diabetes should avoid it altogether.
Potatoes
According to researchers from the University of Surrey, UK, potatoes are rich in carbohydrates, making them unsuitable for diabetics. When consumed, the body breaks down the carbs into simple sugars that enter the bloodstream, leading to sudden blood sugar spikes.
Diabetics can eat potatoes but should limit their intake.
Lotus Root
Lotus root is nutrient-dense and offers various health benefits. In traditional medicine, it is believed to aid digestion, strengthen the lungs, stop bleeding, and promote relaxation.
However, 70% of lotus root consists of starch, which can lead to an increase in insulin production. Therefore, diabetics should consume it in moderation.
Corn
According to traditional medicine, corn is considered beneficial for reducing swelling, balancing liver function, and clearing phlegm. However, it is high in carbohydrates, which can raise blood sugar levels if eaten in excess. For this reason, people with diabetes should avoid corn.
