Children invent stories all the time, but they also repeat things they overhear.

Mrs - On the way home from kindergarten, my grandson said, "Grandma, I'm going to tell you a secret Mom and Dad said even the police can't know" — I laughed at

“Behind what wall?”

“The fake wall.”

I nearly missed a turn.

“Fake wall?”

He nodded enthusiastically.

“Dad opens it sometimes.”

Now I was paying very close attention.

“What do you mean he opens it?”

“There’s a door but it doesn't look like a door.”

I looked in the rearview mirror.

Noah appeared completely sincere.

Children are often terrible liars because they either giggle or exaggerate. Noah was doing neither.

He simply seemed to be describing something he believed was real.

“What happens when your dad opens it?” I asked.

“He goes inside.”

“Inside where?”

“The room.”

“What room?”

“The secret room.”

I told myself not to overreact.

Perhaps my son-in-law had built a storage area. Maybe Noah had discovered a hidden compartment used for tools or equipment.

But then he added another detail.

“Mom says I shouldn't tell anyone.”

That sentence changed everything.

Parents often ask children not to discuss surprise gifts, holiday plans, or private family matters.

But hearing it combined with hidden rooms and fake walls made me uneasy.

“Why shouldn't you tell anyone?” I asked.

“Because it's a secret.”

“What kind of secret?”

Noah stared out the window.

“I don't know.”

That answer felt genuine.

Children frequently know pieces of information without understanding their meaning.

When we arrived at my house, I couldn't stop thinking about the conversation.

After Noah settled inside with a snack, I called my daughter.
