“Jason! You need to hear this.”
A minute later my son-in-law appeared.
My daughter repeated Noah's story.
He laughed just as hard.
“Wait,” he said. “Did he tell her about the police too?”
“Yes.”
Now both of them were nearly crying from laughter.
I folded my arms.
“Would someone please explain?”
Jason looked at my daughter.
“Should we show her?”
My daughter grinned.
“Absolutely.”
They led me through the house and into the garage.
I immediately looked around for anything unusual.
Nothing stood out.
Just shelves, tools, storage bins, and bicycles.
Then Jason walked to a large shelving unit attached to the wall.
He pulled a hidden latch.
To my astonishment, the entire shelving section swung outward.
Behind it was a doorway.
I gasped.
“There really is a secret room!”
My daughter laughed again.
“Yes.”
The hidden room wasn't sinister.
It wasn't illegal.
It wasn't dangerous.
It was simply a private hobby space.
Several years earlier, Jason had converted a storage area into a workshop where he built furniture and worked on personal projects.
Because the room was hidden behind shelving, visitors rarely noticed it.
Noah had accidentally discovered it months before.
“But why tell him not to talk about it?” I asked.
My daughter smiled.
“Because every time guests come over, he immediately announces it.”
