But it did.
Every single time.
When prom season arrived, everyone suddenly became obsessed with finding a date.
The hallways were filled with conversations about dresses, tuxedos, dinner reservations and photographs.
I avoided those conversations completely.
I had already decided that I wasn't going.
Then, one afternoon, something happened that I never expected.
Caleb walked up to me.
Caleb was practically the opposite of me.
He was handsome, confident and popular. He played football and seemed to know everyone in school.
Girls constantly talked about him.
So when he stopped in front of my locker, I assumed he wanted something.
Instead, he smiled.
“Are you going to prom?”
I laughed nervously.
“Probably not.”
“Why not?”
I shrugged.
“I don't have anyone to go with.”
He looked at me for a moment.
“Then go with me.”
I thought I had misheard him.
“Sorry?”
“I said, go to prom with me.”
For the first time in years, I didn't know what to say.

I eventually said yes.
For the next few weeks, I wondered whether I had made a mistake.
Why would Caleb choose me?
Was it some kind of joke?
