My stomach twisted.

I looked at Caleb.

His face had gone completely pale.

“Caleb?”

He didn't answer.

“What's happening?”

The officer took a breath.

“We've been investigating a situation involving your school.”

Everyone around us was silent.

The officer continued.

“Over the past several months, a number of students have been involved in online harassment, threats and the distribution of humiliating material targeting other students.”

My heart was pounding.

Then he said something I never expected.

“Caleb came forward and gave us information.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

The officer looked at Caleb.

“He has been helping us identify the students responsible.”

The entire room seemed to disappear.

The laughter stopped.

Nobody moved.

Caleb finally looked at me.

“I was trying to protect you.”

I shook my head.

“I don't understand.”

He took a breath.

“Remember all those messages people were sending you?”

I nodded.

“I helped the school and police trace where some of them were coming from.”

My eyes widened.

The jokes.
