Pay attention when renting a motel or hotel room
If You See These Three Things in a Motel or Hotel Room, Check Out Immediately
If you notice these signs in a motel or hotel room, it could indicate an unsafe environment, and you should consider leaving immediately.
When traveling for business or leisure, most people book a hotel or motel for rest. Many have the habit of settling in without thoroughly inspecting the room, which can be a big mistake. After checking in, you should always check for anything unusual in the room.
1. Two-Way Mirrors
Hotel room mirrors are typically one-way mirrors, but you should still check all mirrors carefully to avoid potentially hidden two-way mirrors.
A two-way mirror allows people to see into the room from the other side or conceal a hidden camera behind it without your knowledge.
Unlike a regular mirror, a two-way mirror reflects images differently. From the front, it looks normal, but someone on the other side may see you clearly.
How to Check for a Two-Way Mirror
- Place the tip of your finger against the mirror.
- If there is a gap between your fingertip and its reflection, it is a regular mirror.
- If your fingertip directly touches the reflection without any gap, it is likely a two-way mirror.
2. Hidden Cameras
A hotel room should be a private space for guests. Hotel owners should not install cameras in guest rooms, as surveillance cameras are typically placed only in public areas for security purposes.
However, malicious individuals may secretly install hidden cameras in a room without the knowledge of hotel staff or guests.
How to Detect Hidden Cameras
- Turn off all the lights and close the curtains to make the room completely dark.
- Use your phone’s video recording mode and scan the room.
- If you notice a small red or blue blinking light, inspect the area carefully—it could be a hidden camera.
- Alternatively, use your phone’s flashlight to scan the entire room. Hidden cameras often reflect light, making them easier to spot.
If you find any suspicious devices, immediately notify hotel staff for assistance.
3. Dir.ty Faucets and Showerheads
After checking in, always inspect the cleanliness of the room, especially the faucets and showerheads.
If you notice built-up grime, limescale, or dirt on the showerhead or water taps, it may indicate that the hotel does not maintain proper hygiene.
How to Check for Hygiene Issues
- Unscrew the showerhead nozzle and inspect the water pipes.
- If you find hair, dirt, or other debris, avoid using it and request a clean replacement.
- If the overall cleanliness of the room is unsatisfactory, you can ask the front desk for a room change or consider checking out.
If you are not satisfied with the hotel’s hygiene standards or their response to your concerns, it is best to check out and find another accommodation.
