THE BIKER WHO WAITED OUTSIDE

The rain had turned the entire city into a blur of headlights and reflections when Marcus stopped his motorcycle outside a twenty-four-hour convenience store. He had only pulled over to buy water before continuing home. The store was almost empty, its fluorescent lights spilling onto the wet pavement.

Marcus was thirty-five, tall and heavily built, with broad shoulders, short dark hair, a rough jawline, deep-set brown eyes, and a small scar near his right temple. His black leather motorcycle jacket, dark jeans, and heavy boots made him look intimidating enough that most strangers avoided eye contact. But Marcus had always been the kind of man who noticed when someone needed help.

He was putting his helmet back on when the store's glass doors suddenly opened.

A young adult man stumbled outside.

He looked over his shoulder several times before running across the parking lot.

Marcus watched him disappear around the corner.

Then the store clerk came running outside.

“Stop him!”

Marcus looked at her.

“What happened?”

She pointed toward the alley.

“He stole the cash register money!”

Marcus glanced toward the alley.

Then he noticed something strange.

The clerk wasn't looking angry.

She was terrified.

Marcus didn't chase the man.

Instead, he looked back through the glass doors.

The cash register was still sitting behind the counter.

Untouched.

Marcus slowly turned toward her.

“If he stole the register money, why is the register still there?”

The clerk froze.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she quietly locked the store door.

Marcus frowned.

“What are you doing?”

She looked through the glass toward the street.

“You shouldn't have noticed.”

Marcus stared at her.

A black sedan slowly passed the store.

The clerk lowered her voice.

“They're coming back.”

Marcus didn't understand.

“Who?”

She pointed toward the alley where the man had disappeared.

“The man you just saw wasn't a thief.”

Before Marcus could ask another question, the store lights suddenly went out.

The entire building went dark.

Marcus heard the sound of the back door opening.

Someone was inside.

The clerk grabbed his sleeve.

“Don't let them find me.”

Marcus looked at her.

“What did you see?”

She was shaking.

“Everything.”

Footsteps echoed from the back of the store.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Marcus stepped away from the clerk and positioned himself between her and the hallway.

A shadow appeared behind the shelves.

Then another.

Marcus tightened his fists.

But before anyone could reach them, headlights flooded through the front windows.

Police vehicles.

The people inside immediately ran toward the back exit.

Marcus heard the sound of a door slamming.

A few seconds later, officers entered the store.

The clerk collapsed against the counter.

One officer asked what happened.

She pointed toward Marcus.

“He stayed.”

Marcus looked confused.

The officer approached him.

“You don't understand what you just did.”

Marcus looked toward the back door.

“What?”

The officer lowered his voice.

“She was the only witness to a robbery three nights ago.”

Marcus looked at the clerk.

Then at the empty alley.

The officer continued.

“The people who came tonight weren't looking for money.”

Marcus looked back at the woman.

“Then what were they looking for?”

She slowly reached into her coat.

Her hand was trembling.

She pulled out a small memory card.

“This.”

Marcus stared at it.

The officer's expression changed.

“Where did you get that?”

The clerk looked toward the window.

“From the man you thought was a thief.”

Marcus suddenly understood.

The man who had run from the store hadn't been stealing anything.

He had been trying to get the evidence out before they came back.

Marcus looked toward his motorcycle.

Then toward the dark alley.

The man was already gone.

But now Marcus had a choice.

Ride home.

Or find the stranger who had trusted a complete stranger with the evidence.

Marcus picked up his helmet.

“Where did he go?”

The clerk pointed toward the rain-soaked street.

“He said he'd wait under the old bridge.”

Marcus started his motorcycle.

The engine came alive beneath him.

And this time, he wasn't riding away from trouble.

He was riding straight toward it.
