Nobody in the neighborhood trusted Victor Hale.

At forty-one, Victor was the kind of man people noticed the moment he entered a room. He was tall, heavily built, broad-shouldered, and covered in the quiet physical strength that came from years of working with engines and riding motorcycles. His face was rugged and angular, his jaw strong, his dark brown eyes almost always serious, and a faint scar crossed the bridge of his nose. His black hair was kept short, and a trimmed dark beard framed his face.

He wore a black leather motorcycle jacket, faded charcoal T-shirt, black jeans, heavy boots, and black riding gloves.

His motorcycle was an old matte-black cruiser with a scratched fuel tank and a deep engine sound that people could recognize from several streets away.

Victor rarely spoke.

When he did, people listened.

Children were told not to get too close to him.

Parents whispered that he looked like trouble.

And when Victor parked his motorcycle outside the small repair shop where he worked, customers often lowered their voices.

Nobody knew that Victor had been taking care of people in that neighborhood for nearly fifteen years.

He fixed broken bicycles for children for free.

He repaired elderly neighbors' heaters during winter.

He kept a box of emergency groceries behind his workshop for anyone who needed them.

But the one thing Victor had never been able to repair was his own past.

Fourteen years earlier, Victor had been married to a woman named Emma.

She had been twenty-four when they met and twenty-six when they married.

They were young, broke, and happy.

Then their daughter, Mia, was born.

For the first three years, Victor believed he had everything he had ever wanted.

Mia had her mother's smile and Victor's stubbornness.

She followed him everywhere.

Whenever Victor worked on his motorcycle, Mia would sit on an overturned bucket beside him and hand him tools.

She couldn't pronounce half their names.

She called a wrench a "silver hammer."

Victor always pretended she was correct.

Then one winter night, everything changed.

Emma was driving home from work when another vehicle ran a red light.

She survived the crash.

But she never woke up.

Victor became a single father overnight.

Mia was only three.

Victor tried to keep everything together.

He worked during the day.

He repaired motorcycles at night.

He cooked.

He cleaned.

He took Mia to school.

He learned how to braid her hair badly.

He learned which cartoons she liked.

And every night, after putting her to bed, he would sit alone in the kitchen and wonder how he was supposed to raise a child without the woman he had promised to grow old with.

But he did it.

For ten years, Victor was both parents.

Mia grew into a bright, stubborn thirteen-year-old girl.

Then, one afternoon, she came home with a strange question.

"Dad?"

Victor looked up from his workbench.

"What?"

"Why don't I have any pictures of Mom?"

Victor stopped.

There were hundreds of photographs.

But almost all of them were hidden.

Not because he didn't love Emma.

Because looking at her hurt too much.

Victor took Mia upstairs.

He opened an old wooden box.

Inside were photographs, letters, a hospital bracelet, and a small silver necklace.

Mia picked up a photograph.

Her mother was smiling.

Mia stared at it for a long time.
