His voice was no longer gentle.

It was frightened.

Almost desperate.

And that was when I realized something.

Whatever was happening in our house had begun long before I ever met him.

Chapter 4 — The Room Behind the Wall

Megan helped me contact the police.

I showed an officer the recordings.

At first, there was no obvious crime. Evan entering Emma's room wasn't enough by itself. But the officer took the situation seriously, especially because I had documented repeated nighttime incidents involving my daughter.

I didn't go home that night.

The following morning, officers accompanied me back to the house.

Evan wasn't there.

The basement was searched.

The cardboard box was gone.

So was the old cabinet.

It was almost as if someone had known we were coming.

Then an officer noticed something strange.

Behind the cabinet was a section of wall that looked newer than the rest.

There were scratches around the edges.

They examined it carefully.

There was a concealed door.

The brass key marked 17 opened it.

I stood behind the officers as the door slowly swung inward.

Beyond it was a narrow unfinished room.

Dust covered the floor.

Old boxes lined the walls.

And photographs were pinned everywhere.

Photographs of Evan as a child.

Photographs of Nora.

Photographs of the house.

But then I saw something that made my knees weaken.

There were photographs of Emma.

Some had been taken from outside our house.

Others showed her at school.

One showed her playing in the backyard.

Another showed her walking beside me at a grocery store.

They weren't recent.

Some were nearly a year old.

Someone had been watching my daughter.

Then we found the notebooks.

Pages and pages of handwritten observations.

Emma's bedtime.

Her school schedule.

The days Evan worked late.

The times I left the house.

The notes were meticulous.

One line appeared repeatedly:

“She remembers more than she says.”

I felt sick.

The officer asked me whether Emma had ever mentioned a person named Nora.

I shook my head.

Then he showed me something recovered from the hidden room.

A photograph of two children.

Evan and Nora.

Written on the back were three words:

“She saw everything.”

Suddenly, Emma's nightmares made sense.

Maybe the “man with long fingers” wasn't imaginary.

Maybe she had seen someone.

Maybe someone had been entering the house.

But there was another possibility.

One that frightened me even more.

Perhaps Emma had discovered something about Evan.

That evening, police found Evan several miles away.
