Chapter 3 — Skin Changes That Can Accompany Liver Disease
The liver and skin are closely connected through the body's metabolism, circulation, and processing of various substances. When liver function becomes significantly impaired, several changes may become visible on the skin.
One of the most recognizable is jaundice, which causes the skin and the whites of the eyes to develop a yellowish color. Jaundice can occur when bilirubin, a yellow pigment produced during the normal breakdown of red blood cells, accumulates in the bloodstream.
Another symptom that may occur with liver disease is persistent itching. In certain liver and bile duct disorders, substances associated with bile metabolism can accumulate and contribute to intense itching. The itching may affect large areas of the body and sometimes occurs without an obvious rash.
Some people with chronic liver disease can also develop easy bruising or bleeding because the liver plays an important role in producing proteins involved in blood clotting.
There are other skin findings associated with certain chronic liver conditions, including spider angiomas and palmar erythema, in which areas of the palms become noticeably red. These findings can be associated with liver disease but are not exclusive to it.
Importantly, these signs should never be interpreted individually.
For example, yellow skin can have multiple causes, including problems involving the gallbladder, bile ducts, blood cells, or other medical conditions. Likewise, itching can result from dermatological conditions, allergies, medications, or systemic illnesses unrelated to the liver.
The most useful approach is to consider whether several symptoms are appearing together.
A person experiencing persistent itching, yellowing of the eyes, unexplained bruising, abdominal swelling, dark urine, pale stools, or significant fatigue should not attempt to diagnose themselves based solely on internet images. These symptoms deserve professional assessment.
