Chapter 4 — Why a Red Spot on Your Foot Does Not Automatically Mean Liver Disease

The dramatic image that inspired this article suggests a direct connection between the appearance of the foot and the condition of the liver. That type of presentation can attract attention on social media, but medicine is rarely that simple.

A red area around the ankle can result from many ordinary causes. Minor trauma, pressure from footwear, insect bites, eczema, dermatitis, allergic reactions, cellulitis, arthritis, venous problems, or localized inflammation can all produce redness.

Even swelling has many possible explanations.

For example, chronic venous insufficiency can cause fluid to accumulate around the ankles, especially after standing for long periods. Kidney problems can also cause swelling because the body has difficulty regulating salt and fluid. Heart conditions can produce edema as well.

Certain medications can contribute to swollen legs as well. Some blood-pressure medications, hormonal medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, and other medicines can cause fluid retention in susceptible individuals.

This is why using a single foot symptom as a “liver test” can be misleading.

Instead, people should pay attention to clusters of symptoms and changes over time.

A person who suddenly develops severe swelling in one leg, particularly when accompanied by pain, warmth, or redness, needs prompt medical evaluation because conditions involving the veins can sometimes be urgent. Similarly, rapidly worsening swelling, difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, or severe weakness requires immediate medical attention.
