Store them in clean, covered containers.
Keep your refrigerator sufficiently cold.
Avoid repeatedly taking the same container out, allowing it to warm, and putting it back.
Reheat only the portion you plan to eat rather than reheating the entire container multiple times.
And when food has been stored longer than you can confidently justify, throwing it away is usually safer than trying to convince yourself that it “still seems fine.”
Food waste is frustrating.
Food poisoning is worse.
2. Processed Meats: Small Portions Can Still Feel Heavy
The second category worth thinking about is processed meat.
This includes foods such as:
- Bacon
- Sausages
- Hot dogs
- Ham
- Salami
- Pepperoni
- Some deli meats
- Other preserved or cured meat products
These foods are popular because they are convenient, flavorful, and easy to keep refrigerated.
They can turn a simple sandwich into a meal in seconds.
But for some people, they can be difficult on the digestive system—especially when eaten in large portions or frequently.
Why Processed Meat Can Trigger Digestive Discomfort
Many processed meats are relatively high in fat and sodium.
Fat can slow stomach emptying in some people, which may contribute to a feeling of heaviness or fullness.
For someone prone to reflux, a fatty meal may also make symptoms more noticeable.
This can produce sensations such as:
- Heartburn
- Burping
- Bloating
- Fullness
- Nausea
- Upper-abdominal discomfort
Again, this doesn't mean every person will experience these symptoms.
Digestive reactions are highly individual.
Someone may eat a bacon-and-egg breakfast with no problem, while someone else may experience reflux after only a few slices.
The same applies to sausage, ham, and other processed meats.
The Problem May Be the Whole Meal, Not Just the Meat
Sometimes the processed meat gets blamed when the real issue is the entire meal.
Consider a typical breakfast:
Bacon.
Sausage.
Eggs cooked in butter.
