A tattoo on someone's hand, for example, may carry a different context from the same three dots on someone's wrist.
But even then, a tattoo by itself is not enough information to determine who someone is or what they have done.
That's why the viral instruction to “run as far as you can” is misleading.
It turns a symbol with multiple meanings into a simple fear message.
And when you look closer, the truth is much less dramatic.
Which brings me back to my friend.
Because eventually, I asked him the question directly.
And his answer completely changed how I looked at those three little dots.

I finally asked him:
“What do your three dots mean?”
He smiled.
